Substitute Teachers (General, Hebrew, & Jewish Studies and Specials)

The Seattle Jewish Community School (SJCS) welcomes applications for Substitute Teaching positions  in the 2023-2024 school year. These positions provide opportunities to contribute to the educational program in a warm, pluralistic, and inclusive communal context, in partnership with dedicated colleagues, supportive parents, and delightful children.

SJCS seeks teachers who relish working as members of a collegial faculty and in collaboration with all stakeholders. Full-time teaching at the school involves planning, delivering, and assessing curricula; designing lessons with appropriate partners to promote students’ competencies and meet their diverse needs and strengths; using varied pedagogical strategies including those that integrate educational technology and feature place-based and project-based approaches; and drawing inspiration from the Jewish intellectual tradition and its celebration of the intrinsic value of study, the pursuit of understanding and purpose along with knowledge, the power of questions, and the sacred nature of considering different perspectives and of nurturing self-awareness.

Within this professional context, Substitute Teachers generally carry responsibility only for implementing lessons, with plans and additional guidance provided by the full-time teacher for whom they will be substituting.

The school prizes child-centered approaches focused on establishing positive, productive relationships; emphasizing clear, kind, and respectful communication; utilizing school-wide social-emotional frameworks to teach competencies and maintain behavioral expectations; and advancing the school’s focus within the curriculum on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Teachers work with the Inclusive Education Specialist on student assessments; undertake administrative duties such as writing student reports, planning field trips, communicating with parents, and setting up and maintaining inviting classrooms; and participate in professional learning, community events, and partnership with other faculty members on shared projects and activities.
