Dear SJCS Community,
We are thrilled to announce that the SJCS Board of Trustees has hired David Zimand to be SJCS’ Head of School. David will formally start on July 1, 2021 upon the retirement of our current Head of School, Ron Waldman. David taught for eight years on college campuses, for twelve years for grades 4-12 at the National Cathedral School for Girls, administered for nine years at the Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School (pre-k – 8) in the Nation's Capital and served for four years as the Head of School at the Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School (K-8) in Palo Alto, California.
David radiates a love of children and teachers and a passion for Jewish education that honors tradition and aims for the future. A capsule of David’s thinking can be found in the last few sentences of a column that he authored in eJewish Philanthropy from May of this year:
“As we meet the challenges that will come next, we will bring all these [Jewish] values to educating our students, with humble understanding – and faith – that how we help them process the transformative events of their young lives will shape how they, in turn, will work to repair our world. We need them and they need us. Now as much as ever.”
Conducting a Head of School search during the COVID-19 pandemic would not have been possible without the many contributions and participation of SJCS leadership, staff, teachers, parents, students, and alumni. Our heartfelt thanks also go to our Search Committee members Debbie Clement, Rabbi Dana Benson, Joshua Elkin, Rabbi Paula Rose, and Nathan Wasserman for their dedicated effort on behalf of the children and families of our community.
The future of our wonderful school shines as bright as do the Chanukah candles tonight. We look forward to the summer when we hope you can all meet David and warmly welcome him and his family to Seattle!
Thank you and chag sameach,
Board President and Co-Chair, Head of School Search Committee
